The Moroccan national team players raised the Palestinian flag to celebrate their victory on Tuesday against Spain at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
Morocco’s Atlas Lions achieved a historic victory over Spain, beating the team in a penalty shootout 3-0 after neither side scored in regular or extra time.
It is the first time that a country from the Middle East will play in the quarter-finals of the World Cup since Turkey did in 2002.
The Moroccan players celebrated their victory by raising the Palestinian flag alongside their own Moroccan one, taking a group photo with the Palestinian flag on the pitch following the end of the match.
Moroccan striker Abdul Razzaq Hamdallah carried the Palestinian flag and displayed it in the stadium in front of the fans.
The Moroccan fans were also heard chanting for Palestine while celebrating the victory yesterday.
The Palestine flag has become a ubiquitous symbol throughout the world’s most celebrated sporting event despite Palestine not qualifying for the tournament.
Arab and international football fans have decided to express solidarity for Palestine at the event. They have been displaying Palestinian flags, wearing Palestinian armbands, singing and dancing for Palestine, refusing to be interviewed by Israeli channels, or simply leaning into the camera of Israeli broadcasts and chanting for Palestine.
