RAMALLAH, (The Palestine Information Centre)The Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs warned on Wednesday of further escalation in Israeli prisons due to the ongoing indifference to the administrative prisoners’ demands.
The Commission said that the number of administrative detainees in Israeli jails has notably increased.
It noted that five Palestinian prisoners have been on hunger strike for different periods in protest at their ongoing detention without charge or trial, saying that the number may escalate to reach 15 on Thursday.
The Commission called on the International Committee of the Red Cross and human rights and humanitarian institutions to take immediate action to put an end to the administrative detention policy.
Administrative detention is ordered by the Israeli military commander and grounded on a “secret file.” Under administrative detention policy, a prisoner is held without charge or trial for up to 6 months, which can be renewed.
As of July 2023, 1,200 administrative detainees are currently held in Israeli jails.
