RAMALLAH (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) has said that the current number of administrative detainees in Israeli jails is the highest ever in light of the escalating arrest campaign in the West Bank.
In a statement on Sunday, PPS said that the Israeli Occupation Authority (IOA) continues to issue more administrative detention orders against Palestinian citizens, although it recently released a limited number of administrative detainees.
PPS pointed out that the IOA started escalating its detention policy against the Palestinians before the October 7, 2023 events, specifically in April 2022 when the number of administrative detainees climbed to 600, adding that their number exceeded 1,000 prisoners in March 2023.
“After October 7 [2023] and amid the genocide and growing aggression [in Gaza], the number of administrative detainees exceeded 2,000 and continued to rise until it became more than 3,660 prisoners at the beginning of April 2024,” PPS said, describing this number as the highest since the occupation of Palestine.
