BRUSSELS(Palestine Foundation Information Center) The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on Wednesday that “actions that violate the status quo of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem constitute a threat to regional stability.”
This came in a post on Borrell’s account on X, in response to the call of the Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to the UN Security Council and the international community to stop Israel’s illegal actions that violate the legal status of historical and holy sites in Jerusalem.
Borrell indicated that he shares Safadi’s concerns about the status quo of the holy sites, and touched on the actions that pave the way for the violations instructed by the Israeli National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, who led the incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque and made statements about building a synagogue in the Mosque.
Borrell stressed that these concerns are “completely legitimate”, stressing the need for the international community to look into this issue.
On Tuesday, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation reported that the Israeli Ministry of Heritage is seeking to consolidate the occupation’s narrative through the so-called “guided raids” targeting tens of thousands of Jews and foreign tourists, with an allocated budget of two million shekels.
Israeli settlers carry out almost daily raids on the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, under heavy protection from the Israeli police, amid escalating calls by extremist Jewish groups to demolish Al-Aqsa Mosque and build the alleged “Third Temple” over its ruins.
