NEW YORK (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared on Thursday evening full respect for the work and the independence of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
This came in a press conference held by UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, commenting on the ICC’s arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister and former Defense Minister.
Asked if Netanyahu could be arrested if he attended the UN General Assembly in September 2025, Dujarric said: “our colleagues in security are here to keep us safe, to keep the building safe. They’re not here to arrest people.”
As for how an arrest warrant would affect someone’s participation in UN meetings, Dujarric said that any travel by anyone who’s indicted by the ICC would also involve the state in which UN conferences or UN headquarters are located.
Earlier Thursday, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Galant regarding “alleged war crimes” in the Gaza Strip, saying it has found “reasonable grounds” to believe that they bear criminal responsibility for committing war crimes in Gaza.
