Doctors Without Borders: The healthcare system in Gaza is experiencing total destruction

PARIS (Palestine Foundation Information Center) A new report from Doctors Without Borders reveals a sharp deterioration in the health situation in the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing attacks by the Israeli occupying army and the suffocating blockade that has lasted for 14 months.

The report, titled “Gaza: Living in a Death Trap,” indicates that the healthcare system in Gaza is suffering from total destruction, with less than half of the 36 hospitals in the enclave operating partially.

The report adds that Doctors Without Borders staff experienced 41 attacks over the past year, including airstrikes, making it extremely difficult to provide healthcare. It notes that the health facilities supported by the organization conducted at least 27,500 consultations related to violence and 7,500 surgical interventions, reflecting a significant increase in injuries and illnesses. It confirms that the occupation has forcibly displaced about 1.9 million people in northern Gaza, exacerbating health conditions, as many live in unsanitary environments that facilitate the spread of diseases.

The report addresses the suffering of children and the lack of necessary vaccinations, increasing the risk of diseases such as measles and polio, and notes a rise in cases of malnutrition among the population. The organization calls for an immediate ceasefire, the facilitation of humanitarian aid, and the assurance of Palestinians’ rights to access healthcare, warning that the continuation of the current situation will lead to long-term effects on public health in Gaza, where the injured will require years of rehabilitative care.

The report emphasizes that the health situation in Gaza requires urgent action from the international community to ensure the necessary support and care to save lives.

With U.S. support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, resulting in 152,000 martyrs and injured, most of whom are children and women, along with more than 10,000 missing persons, amidst massive destruction and famine that has killed dozens of children and the elderly, marking one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.

Israel continues its massacres, ignoring the United Nations Security Council’s decision to end them immediately, as well as the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
