Five months after his release, ex-detainee Ismail Taqatiqa dies of cancer

RAMALLAH (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) said that Palestinian ex-detainee Ismail Taqatiqa, a 40-year-old from Bethlehem, had been exposed to a systematic medical crime in Israeli jails that led to his death today in Jordan five months after his release.

Taqatiqa was released on August 29, 2024, from Hadassah Hospital after spending five months in detention. One week after his release, he was diagnosed with leukemia.

According to the Commission and PPS, thousands of Palestinian prisoners have been facing systematic abuse and torture in Israeli jails since the Israeli genocidal war on the Gaza Strip started on October 7, 2023,

“Medical crimes and deprivation of treatment have been the most prominent tool used to carry out systematic executions against dozens of prisoners since the war started,” the Commission and PPS said.

They added that the majority of the prisoners who were released during the war suffer from chronic or serious health problems, while many of them were transferred to hospitals shortly after their release.

The Commission and PPS also accused the Israeli prison service of depriving Palestinian citizens of receiving medical treatment in hospitals in Israel (1948 occupied Palestine) and even obstructing their travel to Jordanian hospitals under security pretexts as happened with martyr Ismail Taqatiqa.

The Commission and PPS appealed to the international human rights organizations to necessarily shoulder their responsibilities in this regard and take action against Israel’s violations and crimes against the Palestinian prisoners.
