DOHA (Palestine Foundation Information Center) Leaders of Palestinian factions and political figures visited the home of the late Palestinian Prime Minister and Hamas leader Ismail Haneyya in Doha, Qatar, on Sunday on the first day of the ceasefire in Gaza to meet with his family.
The visiting delegation included the Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad Movement, Ziad al-Nakhala; the Chairman of the Shura Council of Hamas, Muhammad Darwish Ismail; the head of the Movement abroad, Khaled Mashal; the head of the Movement in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya; the Deputy Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Jamil Mizher; and the Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative, Mustafa Barghouti.
During the visit, al-Nakhala stated that they came to commend Haneyya’s role in the “Al-Aqsa Flood” battle and the results achieved, as well as his history of serving the Palestinian cause. He added, “Our presence here reaffirms Abu al-Abed’s presence, and we express our feelings, love, and appreciation for him and his family. We hope that his home remains a high banner in our struggle and jihad for the liberation of Jerusalem, as Haneyya was one of the prominent symbols in the path of Palestinian jihad and resistance.”
Haneyya was assassinated in July 2023 while he was in Tehran to participate in the inauguration of the new Iranian president, Masoud Bezhakian. Hamas stated that Haneyya was martyred along with one of his companions after a guided missile targeted the room he was staying in at the headquarters for veterans of the Revolutionary Guard Corps in the capital, Tehran.
Israel acknowledged months later its responsibility for Haneyya’s assassination in a statement for the Israeli Minister of War, Yoav Gallant.
