GAZA (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Gaza Municipality warned on Monday of a major health and environmental crisis due to thousands of tons of waste piling up in the streets and temporary barrels, as Israeli occupation forces have been preventing its crews from reaching the main landfill near the eastern border of the city following the destruction of most of its machinery during the aggression on the Strip.
“Gaza City is facing a major health and environmental disaster due to the accumulation of about 170,000 tons of garbage in the streets and temporary landfills,” the Gaza Municipality said in a statement.
The municipality added that its teams carried out a campaign to collect and transfer waste from the streets and residential neighborhoods to temporary landfills in the city.
In mid-February, it launched an emergency plan to remove accumulated waste in the streets and neighborhoods and shelter centers of Gaza City to alleviate the health and environmental catastrophe it has been witnessing.
