Egypt rejects proposal to run Gaza, reiterates need for lasting solution to conflict

CAIRO (Palestine Foundation Information Center) Egypt on Wednesday firmly dismissed any proposal suggesting it take over the administration of the Gaza Strip temporarily, reiterating its unwavering commitment to a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Any proposals that circumvent the fundamentals of the Egyptian and Arab position and the sound foundations for dealing with the essence of the conflict are rejected and unacceptable,” Egypt’s official Middle East News Agency quoted Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman Tamim Khalaf as saying.

Khalaf described such proposals as “half solutions” that would only perpetuate the cycles of conflict rather than achieving permanent peace.

He underscored the geographical contiguity of the Palestinian territories, stressing the “organic connection between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, constitutes the land of the future Palestinian state, which must be under full Palestinian sovereignty and administration.”

Israeli opposition leader Yair proposed on Tuesday that Egypt assume administrative control of the Gaza Strip for at least eight years in exchange for the international community settling its foreign debt.
