Yemen: Armed forces downed a US spy drone, attacked US warships

SANA’A (Palestine Foundation Information Center) Yemen’s armed forces said on Tuesday that they had shot down a US MQ-9 drone over the Yemeni northwestern province of Hajjah, and launched fresh counterattacks against two US warships.

“We shot down a hostile American MQ-9 drone which was carrying out a spying mission in the airspace of Hajjah province,” military spokesperson Yehya Sariee said in the televised statement aired by Yemen’s al-Masirah satellite channel.

“The drone was shot down, using a homemade surface-to-air missile,” he said, adding that “the MQ-9 drone is the seventh drone we had shot down this April and the 22nd since November 2023.”

Sariee also said the armed forces launched fresh retaliatory attacks against two US aircraft carriers — from them the US army has been conducting airstrikes against civilian targets across northern Yemen since mid-March.

“We carried out two military operations targeting the American aircraft carriers: the USS Harry S. Truman and the USS Carl Vinson and their escort warships in the Red and Arabian Seas, using cruise missiles and drones,” Sariee said.

The Houthi military spokesperson stressed that the group would always be ready to respond to the US military escalation against Yemen.

“We will continue to deal responsibly and appropriately with any developments in the coming days at all levels,” he said.

“We will not stop supporting and defending the Palestinian people until the Israeli aggression against Gaza stops and the blockade on it is lifted,” he reiterated.
