Hamas: US veto at the UN Security Council is green light for war criminal Netanyahu

GAZA (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Hamas Movement said that “the US use of the veto power embodies the American administration’s blind bias toward the Israeli occupation and supports its crimes against humanity in Gaza.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, Hamas added that “the US position constitutes a green light for the war criminal Netanyahu to continue his brutal genocide against innocent civilians in Gaza.”

The Movement strongly condemned that “the US administration would block the will of the entire world, as 14 out of 15 UN Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution.”

It noted that “the Security Council’s failure to stop the genocide raises serious questions about the role of international institutions and the effectiveness of international law.”

Hamas called on the international community to “urgently intervene to halt this moral and political collapse and to pressure for an end to the genocide.”

Similarly, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) described the US position as “direct complicity in the genocide being committed against the Palestinian people.”

Earlier on Wednesday evening, the United States blocked a draft resolution in the United Nations Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, using its veto power despite support from the other 14 member states.

All 14 Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution, which called for an end to the Israeli aggression on Gaza and the entry of humanitarian aid. However, Washington’s objection prevented it from passing.

The resolution was drafted by the 10 non-permanent member states of the Security Council, who serve two-year terms.

The draft described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic,” and called for the “immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and to ensure its safe, unimpeded, and widespread distribution, including by the United Nations and its humanitarian partners.”

This is not the first time the United States has used its veto power to block UN resolutions related to ending the aggression on Gaza or condemning Israeli violations.

Since the outbreak of the latest war on Gaza in October 2023, Washington has repeatedly obstructed Security Council efforts to pass resolutions calling for a ceasefire or the opening of safe humanitarian corridors, despite near-unanimous support from other council members.

With unconditional US support, Israeli forces have been committing acts of genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, resulting in over 179,000 Palestinians killed or injured—most of them children and women—alongside more than 11,000 missing and hundreds of thousands displaced.
