WEST BANK,(Palestine Foundation Information Center) The United Nations reiterated its firm opposition to Israeli settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories, affirming such actions have no legitimacy under international law.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, addressing reporters, declared that Israel’s decision to expand the E1 settlement is categorically unacceptable.
He stressed that settlements markedly undermine the viability of the two-state solution, calling on the Israeli government to cease all settlement activity and fully comply with its international legal obligations.
The E1 plan refers to a large-scale settlement project covering nearly 12 square kilometers east of Jerusalem, positioned between Ma’ale Adumim and the city itself. It aims to link the settlement to Jerusalem, effectively cutting off East Jerusalem from the rest of the occupied West Bank and disrupting territorial continuity between northern and southern Palestinian zones.
The project includes the construction of over 3,400 housing units, along with supporting infrastructure and facilities, developments that would render a geographically contiguous Palestinian state nearly impossible.
Initially proposed in the 1990s, the E1 plan was frozen under international pressure, only to be recently revived, prompting broad condemnation from the UN, the European Union, and numerous states. It has been widely denounced as a flagrant violation of international law and a devastating blow to the two-state solution.
