GAZA,(Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza, Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, has warned that the health and humanitarian situation in the Strip has reached an unprecedented breaking point since the war began, stressing that Gaza’s health system is on the verge of total collapse.
In a statement on X on Wednesday, Abu Salmiya revealed that hospital bed occupancy has exceeded 300%, leaving medical facilities unable to cope with the relentless influx of wounded, sick, and starving patients.
He said the health sector is experiencing a severe shortage of medicines and medical supplies, around 60% of essential drugs are unavailable, and warned that the remaining stock will last only a matter of days.
Doctors are reporting an alarming rise in complex injuries, including amputations and infected wounds caused by the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Hospitals are also daily receiving dozens of bodies of patients who died in tents due to lack of medicine and food, most of them suffering from chronic diseases.
Children are facing dire conditions, with four newborns forced to share a single incubator due to extreme overcrowding. At the same time, medical staff are exhausted after nearly 22 months of continuous war, while hospitals face critical shortages in blood units and laboratory materials.
Abu Salmiya warned that Israel’s threats to invade Gaza City, home to more than one million residents, would result in what he described as “the largest massacre in modern history.” He renewed his call on the international community to intervene immediately to stop the “war of genocide,” stressing that continued global silence will only lead to an uncontrollable humanitarian catastrophe.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has waged a US-backed genocidal war on Gaza. According to Gaza’s health authorities, the war has so far killed 62,064 people and injured 156,573 others, the majority being women and children.
More than 10,000 people remain missing beneath the rubble, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced amid a deepening famine that continues to claim lives daily.
