A drop in the ocean, first medical shipment reached Gaza since March

GAZA (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced that the organization delivered medical supplies to Gaza on Wednesday for the first time since March 2.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Ghebreyesus said that the aid is “only a drop in the ocean.”

The shipment includes 9 trucks carrying essential medical supplies, 2,000 units of blood, and 1,500 units of plasma.

He added: “The medical supplies were transported through the Kerem Abu Salem border crossing without being looted, despite the extremely dangerous conditions along the route.”

He explained that the supplies will be distributed to priority hospitals in the coming days.

The blood and plasma were transferred to the cooling storage at Nasser Hospital for further distribution to facilities facing critical shortages “due to the rising number of injuries resulting from incidents at food distribution points.”

Away from UN and international organization oversight, since May 27, Tel Aviv and Washington have begun implementing a plan to distribute limited aid via the so-called “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation,” effectively forcing starving Palestinians to choose between death by hunger or being shot by Israeli forces.

Ghebreyesus noted that four WHO trucks remain at the Kerem Abu Salem crossing, with more en route to Gaza.

He expressed his gratitude to the Palestinian Ministry of Health and the United Nations for their support.

“These medical supplies are only a drop in the ocean. Large-scale assistance is essential to save lives,” he stressed. “The WHO calls for immediate, unimpeded, and sustained delivery of health aid into Gaza through all possible routes,” he added.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with US backing, has been committing acts of genocide in Gaza, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, in defiance of international calls and binding orders from the International Court of Justice to stop.

The genocide has resulted in more than 188,000 Palestinians killed or wounded, most of them women and children, with over 11,000 missing. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced, and famine has claimed the lives of many, including children.

Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza for 18 years, and now nearly 1.5 million Palestinians, out of about 2.4 million in the Strip, are homeless after the destruction of their homes during the genocidal war.
