After the martyrdom of Abu Zuneid: Hamas calls on international institutions to protect prisoners

RAMALLAH (Palestine Foundation Information Center)  Hamas has called on the international community, the United Nations, and its institutions to work on protecting Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli occupation’s jails and to stop the horrific violations they face at the hands of the “extremist Zionist regime.”

In a statement on Monday, Hamas described the martyrdom of prisoner Mu’taz Abu Zuneid (35 years old) in the occupation’s prisons as a war crime, noting that the occupation continues to commit war crimes and violate all international laws concerning prisoners, in a clear translation of the “fascist decisions” of the occupation government and the extremist minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

Hamas pointed out that the crimes of the occupation and the systematic operations of abuse and killing against prisoners continue, with Abu Zuneid falling as a martyr “due to torture and brutal measures.”

Hamas said, “We renew our pledge to our steadfast and resilient people and to our heroic prisoners in the jails, affirming that their freedom is imminent.”

It called on the Palestinian people, especially in the West Bank, to intensify activities supporting the prisoners and “escalate confrontations with the occupation and its fascist army in response to its escalating crimes against our people, our sanctities, and our prisoners.” It also urged the international community and the United Nations to work on protecting the Palestinian prisoners.

Hamas also reiterated its call on international human rights organizations to shed light on the suffering of Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli jails, amplify their voices, and exert pressure in all forums for their release.

With the martyrdom of detainee Abu Zuneid from Dura, the number of martyrs among prisoners and detainees in the Israeli jails since October 2023 has risen to 55, whose identities are known. This number is historically the highest, making this phase the bloodiest in the history of the prisoners’ movement since 1967. The number of known martyrs from the prisoners’ movement since 1967 has reached 292, noting that there are dozens of martyrs from Gaza detainees whose identities were not disclosed. It is also noted that martyr Abu Zuneid is the fifth administrative detainee to die in the occupation’s prisons since the beginning of the extermination war on Gaza in October 2023.
