Al‑Nunu: We hope the new mediators’ proposal will lead to an end to the war

DOHA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center)   Senior Hamas official Taher Al-Nunu expressed hope that the new proposal drafted by mediators, and accepted by the Hamas Movement, would mark the beginning of a pathway toward halting the war in Gaza.

In televised remarks on Monday evening, Al‑Nunu said that the proposal, approved by both Hamas and other Palestinian factions, represents a compromise between the previous stances of the factions and Israel’s earlier position.

“We prioritized the national interest by approving the new, mid‑point proposal, and we hope it will lead to a path to end the war.”

Al‑Nunu also confirmed that the proposal includes US guarantees embedded in its terms.

On Monday evening, Hamas informed the Egyptian and Qatari mediators that it had agreed to the ceasefire proposal in the Gaza Strip.

In a brief statement, Hamas said that it and the other Palestinian factions had communicated their acceptance of the proposal presented by the Egyptian and Qatari mediators.

Palestinian sources provided key details of the mediators’ new proposal later Monday evening.

They explained that the Egypt‑Qatar proposal includes a modification to Israel’s withdrawal lines from Gaza during the truce, limiting the withdrawal to 800 meters along the eastern, northern, and southern borders of Gaza.

The proposal also stipulates the entry of 600 trucks per day, transporting humanitarian aid, commercial goods, and shelter materials through recognized UN and relief institutions.

A prominent feature of the proposal is a prisoner exchange deal: In exchange for the release of 10 live Israeli captives, Israel would free 1,700 Palestinian detainees, including 1,500 from Gaza.

The newly accepted proposal establishes serious negotiations starting from the first day of the six‑week truce, aiming to end the war within that period.

The sources emphasized that Hamas’s acceptance does not guarantee that an agreement will be reached but rather shifts the ball to the Israeli and US courts, awaiting their responses, which will determine the fate of the current negotiation round.

Earlier in the day, Palestinian leadership sources confirmed that Hamas had accepted the new mediators’ proposal, a point echoed by Hamas leader Basem Naeem in a Facebook post on his official page.
