AL-KHALIL (Palestine Foundation Information Center) Al-Khalil Municipality warned on Tuesday that the Israeli excavations being carried out by Israeli occupation authority (IOA) in the courtyards of the Ibrahimi Mosque are aimed at Judaizing and changing the status quo in the holy site.
“These measures come in the context of the IOA attempts to strip the municipality of its powers, which is part of a wider Israeli plan aimed at creating new fait accompli and obliterating the Palestinian identity of the site,” the Municipality said in a statement.
It added that “these excavations and diggings represent a flagrant violation of international law, as they lack any legal objective or justification.”
It explained that “these actions pose a serious threat to the historical and religious structure of the Ibrahimi Mosque, as well as to its surroundings, which represent an integral part of the Palestinian cultural heritage.”
It further explained that these attacks “come within a series of ongoing violations aimed at Judaizing the Ibrahimi Mosque and changing its Islamic and historical features.”
The Municipality called on all local and international institutions to “immediately intervene to stop these violations and protect the Ibrahimi Mosque.”
