RAMALLAH(Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has accused the Israeli prison service (IPS) of deliberately creating a fertile environment for the spread of skin diseases among the Palestinian prisoners in its jails, calling on the World Health Organization (WHO) to shoulder its responsibilities in this regard.
The Commission’s lawyer, who recently visited Megiddo prison, said that the health conditions of the prisoners are “difficult and disturbing,” especially their suffering from skin diseases that keep spreading and worsening every day.
“The reason for the spread of such diseases is the prison administration’s refusal to provide the prisoners with medicines and treatments. They are also deprived of getting cleaning supplies and disinfectants and given a few minutes to shower using only water,” the lawyer explained.
The Commission called on WHO to act immediately to visit all the Israeli prisons and detention centers, especially Megiddo, and work on providing medication for the sick detainees in general and those suffering from contagious skin diseases in particular.
