Critical medical supplies run out, Gaza’s labs and blood banks face closure

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Gaza’s Ministry of Health warned on Monday that medical laboratories and blood banks across the Strip are on the brink of a complete shutdown due to the continued ban on the entry of essential laboratory supplies amid Israel’s ongoing attacks against Palestinians.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health in Gaza said the prolonged interruption in deliveries has severely disrupted laboratory operations and blood services, pushing the health system closer to collapse.

The ministry reported that shortages have reached critical levels, with 84 percent of so-called “zero-stock” laboratory testing items already depleted. Deficits in basic laboratory consumables and supplies have climbed to approximately 71 percent.

As a result, a growing number of vital diagnostic tests are at risk of being halted entirely. These include complete blood count (CBC) tests, coagulation profiles, blood gas analyses, microbiology testing, cancer diagnostics, and blood compatibility testing required for transfusions.

Health officials warned that the absence of these tests makes it impossible to provide adequate medical care to patients and the wounded, particularly in intensive care units, operating rooms, emergency departments, and neonatal intensive care units.

The ministry urgently called on relevant authorities and international actors to intervene immediately to replenish laboratory and blood bank stocks. It cautioned that these facilities are facing an extremely critical moment that could soon end in the permanent suspension of their services.
