Gaza faces acute food insecurity, 1.6 million at risk amid ongoing crisis

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Integrated Food Security organization has warned that approximately 1.6 million people in the Gaza Strip are facing acute food insecurity due to the ongoing economic crises and continued conflicts in the region.

The organization noted that this situation poses a serious threat to the lives of residents, calling on the international community to intensify humanitarian support and emergency measures to provide food and basic assistance to those affected.

The Director-General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Dr. Munir Al-Bursh, warned that around 320,000 children under the age of five in the Gaza Strip are at risk of acute malnutrition as a result of the ongoing economic and humanitarian crises and the shortage of food and basic aid.

He pointed to the urgent need to provide immediate food and medical support for children to protect their health and lives, urging the international community to step up efforts to alleviate suffering in the Strip.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) confirmed that conditions in the Gaza Strip remain dire, with families continuing to endure severe hardship due to the acute shortage of food and widespread destruction.

Based on the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, the agency explained that about 1.6 million people in Gaza are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity, reflecting an urgent need for immediate humanitarian interventions to provide food and essential support to the population.

For its part, Save the Children warned that the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip continues despite the halt in the war, stressing the urgent need to provide support to the population.

The organization emphasized the necessity of opening border crossings to allow the entry of humanitarian aid into the Strip, including mobile homes and winter clothing, with particular focus on protecting children amid the bitter cold.

Meanwhile, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor warned that the Israeli occupation is turning winter into a means of killing Gaza’s residents through the siege and the prevention of the entry of temporary shelters.

The Monitor pointed to the imminent risk of the collapse of hundreds of damaged homes as weather conditions worsen, forcing civilians to choose between houses at risk of collapse or tents that offer no protection from the cold and rain.

It affirmed that Israel’s policy of “denial of shelter” is part of a systematic approach of forcible displacement and stripping residents of their right to safe housing, calling on the international community and the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing to pressure Israel to lift the ban immediately, warning that continuing this policy during winter amounts to deliberate killing.
