GMO: Closure of Gaza crossings led to shutdown of dozens of bakeries, paralysis of transportation

GAZA (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Government Media Office in Gaza (GMO) said the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is deepening in an unprecedented manner, due to Israel’s continued closure of the Gaza Strip crossings, which led to the shutdown of dozens of bakeries and paralyzed the transportation sector.

The GMO director-general, Ismail Thawabta, explained that the closure of the crossings for 12 days now threatens the food security of more than 2.4 million Palestinians in Gaza who are already suffering from harsh living conditions due to the war and its repercussions as well as the ongoing siege.

Thawabta stressed in a statement on Thursday that preventing the entry of fuel, cooking gas and basic materials, in light of the deteriorating humanitarian conditions, amounts to a crime of mass strangulation practiced by Israeli occupation forces with premeditation.

He pointed out that preventing the entry of fuel into the Gaza Strip has caused a complete paralysis of the transportation sector, disrupting the movement of citizens and paralyzing their ability to reach hospitals and medical centers, and depriving thousands of citizens, employees and workers from reaching their workplaces.

Thawabta noted that the suffocating siege “has left no room for normal life in Gaza, turning it into a large prison where people are denied their most basic rights.”

He warned of the catastrophic repercussions of this closure, calling on the international community and human rights and humanitarian organizations to take immediate action to pressure Israel to open the crossings urgently and without restrictions, and to allow the entry of fuel and relief supplies.
