NEW YORK (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Israeli genocide in Gaza which has been going on for a year, “continues to shatter lives and inflict profound human suffering for Palestinians in Gaza, and now the people of Lebanon.”
In a video message marking the anniversary of the Gaza war, Guterres urged the international community to focus on the “terrible events” that occurred, expressing his solidarity with all the victims and their loved ones.
“It is time for the release of the hostages. Time to silence the guns. Time to stop the suffering that has engulfed the region. Time for peace, international law, and justice,” he said.
The UN chief stressed the need for “a permanent solution to the conflict to allow Israel, Palestine, and all other countries in the region to live in peace and dignity and with respect for one another.”
Guterres had previously underscored during a UN Security Council meeting in October 2023 that Hamas’s attack on Israel did not come “from the vacuum”, noting that the Palestinian people have been suffering for decades from the Israeli occupation.
