GAZA (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Hamas Movement congratulated the Lebanese people on electing Jospeh Aoun as Lebanon’s 14th president on Thursday.
In a statement, the Movement wished the former army chief “success in leading the country towards prosperity” and said it hoped he could help the Lebanese people achieve their goal of “liberating their land from the Zionist enemy”.
Hamas also called for granting Palestinian refugees in Lebanon their social and human rights to live a “dignified life” until they can return to their homeland.
Lebanon’s army chief Joseph Aoun has been elected as the country’s president, ending a power vacuum that lasted for more than two years.
Aoun secured 99 votes from the 128-seat parliament to win the presidency in a second round of voting on Thursday afternoon – a move that came weeks after a tenuous ceasefire agreement halted 14 months of Israeli aggression on the country.
Lebanon is home to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians – the survivors and descendants of Nakba, when Zionist armed groups drove Palestinians out of their land to allow for the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948.
