Hamas Calls for Global Action to Stop Abuse of Palestinian Prisoners

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Hamas said on Monday that Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli occupation prisons are facing inhumane conditions and systematic abuse, calling on the international community to take immediate action to end their suffering.

In a statement, Hamas said that footage broadcast by Hebrew-language media showing brutal mistreatment of detainees by the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) reveals what it described as some of the most extreme forms of cruelty and a blatant challenge to humanity and to international laws and conventions.

It stressed that prisoners are not merely facing “violations,” but a full-fledged humanitarian crime being committed inside prisons.

The Movement condemned what it called the international community’s silence in the face of the maltreatment of Palestinian prisoners, particularly as Israeli officials, journalists, and institutions openly boast about practices that should shock the global conscience.

Hamas said the number of Palestinian prisoners held by the IOF exceeds 9,300, including thousands detained under administrative detention without charge or trial, in what it described as a flagrant violation of the most basic standards of justice.

According to the statement, detainees are subjected to physical and psychological repression, deliberate medical neglect, denial of family visits, and policies of restriction and starvation, measures that threaten their lives and health and deepen their daily suffering.

Hamas urged the international community, the United Nations and its agencies, and international human rights and humanitarian organizations to move beyond silence on the prisoners’ issue.

It called for urgent action to stop what it described as brutal crimes, to hold Israeli officials accountable, to compel Israel to respect the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law, and to allow international bodies to visit prisons and assess prisoners’ conditions without restrictions.

The Movement also appealed to Arab, Islamic, and international institutions and civil society groups to organize broad solidarity campaigns in support of Palestinian prisoners, to apply pressure on all relevant parties, and to demand their release. It stressed that detainees are not mere numbers, but human beings with rights, lives, and dignity.
