DOHA (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Hamas Movement has strongly denounced the European Union (EU) for imposing sanctions on its chief in Gaza Yehya Sinwar, describing its decision in this regard as “ridiculous” and a reflection of “its bias in favor of the Israeli occupation regime.”
“These sanctions are ridiculous and meaningless because everyone knows that Sinwar does not have financial accounts, neither in Palestine nor abroad,” Taher an-Nunu, media advisor to the head of Hamas’s political bureau, said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Such a decision against Hamas will have no value, but imposing sanctions on leaders of the Palestinian resistance that resists the occupation as a right enshrined in the international law is a bias in favor of the occupation,” Nunu added.
Ignoring the Movement’s right to defend its people and resist the Israeli occupation according to international law, the EU decided to impose sanctions on Tuesday on Yehya Sinwar, the Hamas leader in Gaza, over the resistance group’s military operation against Israel last October in response to its ongoing crimes and violations against the Palestinian people and their holy sites.
The decision by the European Council, which already labels Hamas a terror group, makes Sinwar subject to an asset freeze in the 27-nation bloc and bars EU citizens from conducting financial transactions with him, although he has no financial accounts and has never conducted any transactions with individuals or entities in or outside the EU countries.
