Hamas urges UN to take concrete action against targeting of Gaza’s health sector

Gaza (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Hamas Movement has called on the international community, the United Nations, and relevant international organizations to uphold their legal and humanitarian responsibilities and take tangible, effective measures to end the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza’s healthcare system.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza announced that Al-Durra Children’s Hospital in eastern Gaza City has been rendered non-operational following an Israeli airstrike last Tuesday. The attack targeted solar power panels and the intensive care unit, causing severe damage to the facility and the energy system that supports other departments.

With the shutdown of Al-Durra Hospital, the number of hospitals that have gone out of service since the beginning of the genocide has risen to 37.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Hamas condemned the attack as a continuation of Israel’s systematic destruction of Gaza’s health infrastructure. The Movement stressed that this crime, which directly targeted a medical facility for children, adds to Israel’s extensive record of grave violations of international law and humanitarian conventions.

Hamas said the strike “confirms the determination of this fascist entity to proceed with its genocidal war and forced displacement scheme by destroying the healthcare system and exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.”

Hamas urged the international community, the UN, and particularly organizations such as the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross, to assume their legal and humanitarian obligations. It called for urgent and decisive measures to halt the aggression and to hold Israel accountable for its crimes.

The statement also called for lifting the unjust blockade on Gaza and ensuring the entry of medical supplies, humanitarian aid, and basic necessities.

On 18 March, Israel resumed its genocidal assault on Gaza, coinciding with tightened restrictions and the prevention of humanitarian and medical aid entry since 2 March.

Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza for 18 years. As a result of the ongoing war and destruction of homes, around 1.5 million of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents have been displaced and left without shelter. The Strip is now experiencing famine as Israel continues to block humanitarian aid at the borders.

With full US support, Israel has been committing acts of genocide in Gaza since 7 October 2023, resulting in approximately 168,000 Palestinian casualties—most of them women and children—and over 11,000 missing persons.
