The Jordanian government has declared the obstruction of its humanitarian aid convoys en route to the Gaza Strip by Israeli settlers, accusing them of using force to prevent trucks from delivering life-saving supplies to a starving population.
According to the official Jordanian news agency, government spokesman Dr. Mohammed al-Momani confirmed that settlers have repeatedly attacked Jordanian aid convoys. In the latest incident, which took place on Monday, settlers blocked several aid trucks on public roads and deliberately disabled four of them by scattering sharp objects that punctured the tires.
Al-Momani explained that while two trucks managed to continue their journey after undergoing repairs, the remaining two were forced to turn back to Jordan. “This is not the first time such assaults have taken place,” he added, “and they continue to happen without any real response, which calls for urgent and serious intervention by the Israeli authorities.”
The attacks come amid one of the most devastating humanitarian crises Gaza has witnessed in modern history. Since March 2, when Israel closed all border crossings, aid convoys have been severely restricted, worsening the famine that has already claimed the lives of at least 188 Palestinians, 94 of them children.
The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, confirmed that less than half of the aid allowed into Gaza is actually reaching its intended recipients due to the Israeli control of all checkpoints and crossings. Haq highlighted the complexity and delay of inspections at the two operational crossings approved for UN aid delivery, exacerbating the suffering of civilians.
Meanwhile, desperate Palestinian families in Gaza continue to wait for trucks carrying food and medicine, supplies that once flowed more regularly before the complete blockade was imposed. For many, humanitarian convoys are the last hope to survive a famine now ravaging hundreds of thousands, especially children.
There is cautious hope following Israel’s reported agreement to allow aid into Gaza through the Karam Abu Salem crossing in the south and the Zikim crossing in the north. However, as long as settlers are allowed to block, sabotage, and intimidate relief efforts with impunity, that hope remains fragile.
