Journalist Mujahid Bani Mufleh in critical condition three days after release

RAMALLAH, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Just three days after his release from Israeli jails, Palestinian journalist Mujahid Bani Mufleh was rushed into intensive care following a life-threatening brain hemorrhage.

The journalist underwent urgent brain surgery on Thursday due to a ruptured artery. His brother confirmed that the operation was successful, though Mujahid remains in a coma under close medical observation.

According to his family, Mujahid had experienced severe breathing difficulties immediately after his release, likely due to a dangerous spike in blood pressure. He had long suffered from type 2 diabetes and had been deprived of essential medication and care throughout his detention.

Bani Mufleh was arrested in mid-2023 and held without trial in connection with case no. 2215/2022, facing charges commonly used against political opponents such as “membership in a terrorist group and financing it.” Human rights organizations frequently highlight how these vague charges are used to justify arbitrary detention and “recycling” cases to prolong imprisonment without conviction.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) held the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for Mujahid’s critical condition, citing medical negligence and torture. They confirmed he was released with severe physical and psychological trauma, reflective of widespread patterns of abuse within Israeli prisons.

The PPS described Mujahid’s condition as part of a systematic policy of slow execution, “What happened is not an isolated incident, but rather a continuation of Israel’s strategy of medical neglect and torture.”

The PPS added that journalists remain a prime target for Israeli forces, citing 217 documented cases of journalist detentions since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza on 7 October 2023. Many were subjected to arbitrary arrests, brutal interrogations, and even targeted killings.

Human rights groups continue to call for an independent international investigation into the treatment of detainees in Israeli prisons, where conditions are rapidly deteriorating, and accountability remains elusive.
