Mardawi: Israel’s systematic abuse and medical neglect aimed at weakening detainees

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Hamas Movement has warned that the escalating abuses taking place in Israeli prisons, particularly in Negev Prison during the holy month of Ramadan, reflect an official policy aimed at breaking the will of Palestinian detainees. These practices include intensified mistreatment, deliberate medical neglect, and deprivation of basic necessities such as food and water.

Hamas official Mahmoud Mardawi said on Monday that Israeli authorities bear full responsibility for the consequences of this dangerous escalation, particularly its impact on the lives of prisoners, especially the elderly and those with medical conditions. He warned of a potential explosion of tensions in detention facilities as conditions continue to deteriorate.

Mardawi added that such repressive measures will not succeed in subduing prisoners but will instead strengthen their resilience. He emphasized that prisoners remain a symbol of dignity and a living embodiment of Palestinian resistance.

He also called on Palestinians in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and in the occupied territories, as well as supporters worldwide, to intensify public and grassroots actions in solidarity with prisoners, urging that they not be left alone under these harsh conditions.

According to Palestinian human rights organizations, more than 9,300 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons, including 350 children. Many are subjected to torture, starvation, and medical neglect, which has led to the deaths of dozens.

Since October 2023, Israeli authorities have significantly escalated their repression of Palestinian detainees amid the ongoing war in Gaza, which, according to Palestinian sources, has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties, most of them women and children.
