RAMALLAH,(Palestine Foundation Information Center) Palestinian prisoner Amani al-Najjar, 41, from the town of Yatta south of Al-Khalil, has revealed harrowing details of systematic abuse and inhumane conditions endured by female detainees in the Israeli Damon prison, in a testimony that underscores the suffering of Palestinian women in Israel’s custody amid ongoing international silence.
Al-Najjar described the prison environment as suffocating and unfit for human life, noting that the windows remain sealed shut, ventilation is absent, and contagious skin diseases have spread among the inmates without access to treatment.
According to her account, deliberate starvation is part of the prison’s policy. She said each prisoner is given only half a spoon of condensed yogurt per day, and the total food served is not enough to sustain even a child. Humiliation, she added, is routine and deeply ingrained in the daily treatment of prisoners.
Al-Najjar reported that basic hygiene is almost non-existent, with a few minutes of supposed breaktime turned into a brief opportunity to shower, collect food and medicine, and return swiftly to cells, all while handcuffed.
She also highlighted a dangerous decision by the prison administration to place criminal prisoners in the same rooms where female Palestinian political detainees are held, worsening overcrowding and intensifying the psychological distress faced by the detained women.
