Palestinian Prisoners’ Health Plummets Amid Intensified Starvation Policy

RAMALLAH, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Asra Media Office revealed on Thursday new testimonies it said were received from inside Ganot prison, documenting a rapidly worsening health and psychological conditions among Palestinian prisoners, particularly detainees from the Gaza Strip.

The Office explained that the testimonies speak of the spread of skin and infectious diseases among prisoners, along with many suffering from chronic pain and problems with hearing, eyesight, and teeth, amid the absence of effective treatment and appropriate medical follow up.

It pointed to a noticeable decline in the weights of a number of prisoners, as some of them lost 10s of kilograms due to food shortages and its poor quality.

It added that the prison administration provides limited meals of low nutritional value, with a severe shortage of clothing and hygiene materials, amid the continued denial of family visits, which exacerbates their psychological condition under isolation and ongoing pressure.

The Office held the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the lives and safety of the prisoners, calling for urgent international intervention to stop what it described as a policy of medical neglect and starvation, and to guarantee their basic rights under international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.

These findings come amid the escalation of punitive measures inside prisons since the outbreak of the war on the Gaza Strip, which included reducing food quantities, banning visits, and tightening restrictions inside prison sections, leading to an unprecedented deterioration in the living and health conditions of prisoners, amid warnings of serious consequences for their lives.
