By overwhelming majority, UN votes in favor of New York Declaration

NEW YORK, (The Palestinian Information Center)  The United Nations General Assembly adopted a draft resolution in support of the “New York Declaration,” which calls for the implementation of a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, “explicitly excluding Hamas from the process.”

The resolution passed with overwhelming support: 142 countries voted in favor, 12 opposed, and 10 abstained.

According to Reuters, the declaration condemns Israeli military attacks on civilians in Gaza, as well as damage to civilian infrastructure, the blockade, and starvation tactics.

The declaration also supports the deployment of a temporary international stabilization mission in Gaza, authorized by the UN Security Council. It explicitly condemns Hamas and calls on the Movement to lay down its arms.

The seven-page declaration is the outcome of an international conference hosted by the United Nations in July, co-sponsored by Saudi Arabia and France, but boycotted by the United States and Israel.

Participants at the time agreed on collective measures to end the genocide in Gaza and to work toward a “just, peaceful, and lasting” resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, centered on a two-state solution and a better future for both Palestinians and Israelis, as well as for the broader region.

The declaration was issued by the conference chairs, France and Saudi Arabia, along with the co-chairs of the working groups, which included: Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Norway, Qatar, Senegal, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the Arab League.
