Rights organization: Israeli systematic medical neglect worsens Palestinian sick prisoners’ health

GAZA  (Palestine Foundation Information Center) The Prisoners Affairs Commission revealed in a report on Wednesday after its lawyers visited Israeli prisons the tragic conditions of two medical cases languishing in those prisons.

It added that the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) detains those two Palestinians in tragic and extremely difficult health conditions, in addition to the clear and deliberate medical violations practiced against them, which has exacerbated their health condition.

The Commission explained that the prisoner Hassan Hamad suffers from a weakened heart muscle, as it operates at only 30% of its normal functioning capacity, and the heart works with the help of an external battery to improve its performance. He takes heart medications even before his arrest, but the prison clinic does not provide them on the pretext that they are outside the medication basket. He also suffers from kidney disease since childhood and needs to take injections every 6 months, but the IPS does not provide them.

Regarding the conditions of his detention, the Commission said that Hamad was subjected to severe and brutal beating during his arrest by the Israeli jailers, as a result of which he sustained wounds and bruises, and he was not given any treatment.

As for the health condition of the prisoner Ashraf Sajediya, he suffers from chronic hypertension and wounds due to the assault in the previous prison, where the jailers attacked him with batons all over his body. As a result, he suffered injuries in the head and feet and became unable to hear from his left ear, he also suffers from nervous breakdowns and involuntarily grinds his teeth.

In a related context, the prisoners described the poor condition of the prisons, as many personal necessities and needs were not available to them, including the bad quality and quantity of food and clothes provided to them, and all electrical appliances were confiscated.

The Commission held the IPS fully responsible for the lives of the prisoners and called on international institutions and human rights organizations to assume their role regarding the issue of prisoners, especially the sick among them.
