GAZA, (The Palestine Foundation Pakistan)The European Union (EU) announced on Monday that its monitoring mission will resume operations at the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt next Wednesday.
This came in a post by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, on the social media platform “X.”
Kallas explained that the EU Border Assistance Mission at Rafah (EUBAM Rafah) will restart its duties on October 15.
She emphasized that the mission could play an important role in supporting the ceasefire that came into effect on October 10.
Kallas stressed the need for international support to ensure the success of the ceasefire plan in Gaza, confirming the EU’s readiness to do its part in ensuring a sustainable outcome.
In her post, Kallas said: “Today, the Middle East is witnessing a rare moment of hope,” referring to the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit.
On Monday morning, leaders and officials from several countries began arriving in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh, on the Red Sea coast, to attend the summit aimed at securing an end to Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip.
Kallas highlighted that the release of Israeli captives represents a major diplomatic achievement and “a critical turning point on the path to peace.”
The European official added that ensuring lasting peace in Gaza will be “extremely complex.”
Last Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had reached an agreement on the first phase of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange plan, following indirect negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh, with the participation of Türkiye, Egypt, and Qatar, under US patronage.
