JOHANNESBURG, (The Palestine Foundation Pakistan)
South Africa has reaffirmed that it will continue pursuing its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), stressing that the newly announced ceasefire in Gaza does not erase or diminish the crimes committed during Israel’s genocide.
In a formal statement, the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation said the ceasefire “does not nullify past violations,” noting that the case before the ICJ seeks to prevent the recurrence of atrocities, not merely pause them temporarily.
The ministry added that South Africa’s legal action reflects its historic commitment to opposing apartheid and defending oppressed peoples worldwide.
South Africa first filed its case in December 2023, accusing Israel of acts that amount to genocide against the civilian population in Gaza. The ICJ later issued provisional measures ordering Israel to take urgent steps to protect Palestinians and to ensure humanitarian aid reaches the enclave.
