“We want to apply the Genocide Convention to Israel regarding its behavior against the Palestinians,” she added.

She described what is happening in Palestine as apartheid, stressing that South Africa is seeking to activate the United Nations Committee against Apartheid to investigate Israel’s behavior.

For his part, South African Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola confirmed that the ICJ genocide case filed by his country against the Israeli occupying entity helped influence public opinion and increase international support for the Palestinian cause.

In its plea before ICJ, South Africa called on the court on Thursday to take immediate steps to stop the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, stressing that “nothing justifies genocide, not even the right to self-defense.”

The South African delegation explained at the court that civilians are being pushed from one place to another in the Gaza Strip and the court must act now, calling for urgent aid delivery to save the lives of the people in Gaza.
