Tensions Rise as Israel Expands Incursion into Southern Syria

DAMASCUS, (Palestine Foundation Information Center)، Israeli occupation forces arrested two Syrian youths on Friday at a checkpoint set up in Quneitra Province, following two separate incursions into southern Syria.

According to Syrian state TV “Al-Ikhbariyah,” the Israeli military detained the two after stopping them at a checkpoint between Umm Batnah and the village of Al-Ajraf in the Quneitra countryside. This came after Israeli warplanes flew at low altitudes over the area.

The Syrian TV website reported that an Israeli military patrol made up of eight vehicles entered the villages of Rasem Al-Halabi, Al-Mushayrifah, and Umm Batnah in rural Quneitra on Friday night.

Another Israeli patrol reportedly entered along the Maariyah-Abidin road in the Yarmouk Basin area of Daraa Province, where it set up a security checkpoint and conducted searches.

On Wednesday night, Israeli forces raided a house in the Yarmouk Basin area and detained a young man.

A few days ago, the Golan Foundation documented the abduction of 39 individuals, some of them minors, by Israeli occupation forces during repeated incursions into Syrian territory since the fall of the Assad regime.

Roughly two weeks earlier, Israeli forces carried out a massacre in the town of Beit Jinn, located on the slopes of Mount Hermon in the Damascus countryside, killing 13 people and injuring around 25.

Israeli military outposts are spread across southern Syria, nfrom Mount Hermon to the Yarmouk Basin near Daraa Province, with eight points in Quneitra and one in Daraa.

Since the collapse of Assad’s regime, Israeli violations in the area have continued, with near-daily incursions into the countryside of Quneitra and Daraa accompanied by arrests. Some detainees were later released, while others remain in custody.

On December 8, 2024, Israel announced the collapse of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement with Syria, while Damascus repeatedly demanded an end to the Israeli violations of its sovereignty.
