Travel to resume through Rafah crossing under strict Israeli control

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), A limited number of citizens are getting prepared to travel in both directions through the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt on Monday, amid tight Israeli restrictions.

On Sunday, the Israeli occupation army announced that it had completed the construction of a screening and inspection corridor or checkpoint for passengers entering Gaza from Egypt through the Rafah crossing.

The checkpoint, dubbed “Regavim,” is located in Israeli-occupied Rafah in southern Gaza, just outside the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt.

The Israeli army said that its security officers at the terminal would verify the identities of those entering against lists approved by the Israeli military establishment and conduct thorough inspections of their luggage.

However, unlike the entry of Palestinians to Gaza, Israel will only supervise the exit of Gazans to Egypt remotely, according to the Hebrew media.

A team of Palestinian Authority representatives and monitors from the European Union stationed at the crossing will be tasked with conducting security screenings for those leaving the Strip.

In the first few days, approximately 200 people, patients and their family members, will transit daily into Egypt through the crossing, Egyptian officials said, with 50 people returning to Gaza per day.

This marks the first reopening of the Rafah crossing since Israeli forces shut it down and destroyed its facilities during their invasion of Rafah in May 2024.
