BEIRUT, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced that its peacekeepers were fired upon yesterday by the Israeli army near the town of Sarda in southern Lebanon.
According to UNIFIL’s statement, peacekeepers conducting a routine patrol along the Blue Line came under fire from an Israeli Merkava tank.
The statement noted that the Israeli army fired a burst of 10 rounds from machine guns over the patrol, followed by four additional bursts of 10 rounds each, fired nearby.
UNIFIL emphasized that the Israeli attack on or near its forces constitutes a serious violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Resolution 1701, which was adopted on August 11, 2006, was aimed at ending the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah. It calls for a full cessation of hostilities, Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, deployment of the Lebanese army in coordination with UNIFIL, and the establishment of a weapon-free zone between the Blue Line and the Litani River.
