GENEVA (Palestine Foundation Information Center) UNRWA has warned that the situation in Jenin refugee camp, in the northern occupied West Bank, is taking a “catastrophic” turn due to the destruction of dozens of homes and buildings by the Israeli occupation forces (IOF).
Some 30,000 residents from Jenin camp have fled their homes after large swaths of it were destroyed in a series of controlled detonations by the IOF, according to UNRWA.
UNRWA communications director Juliette Touma told journalists in Geneva on Tuesday that “the camp is going into a catastrophic direction.”
“It is estimated that 100 houses were destroyed or heavily damaged,” Touma said.
“This detonation that happened on Sunday was when children were supposed to go back to school,” Touma added.
“The residents of this particular camp have endured the impossible,” Touma affirmed.
She noted that 13 UNRWA schools in the camp and its surrounding areas remain closed, depriving 5,000 children of education.
She said that the agency, which has been unable to provide services in the camp since earlier December, had received no prior warning of the explosions from the Israeli authorities.
