GAZA, Sept 22, 2025 —
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said on Sunday that nearly 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israel’s ongoing military campaign. The agency described the scale of human suffering and destruction as “unimaginable.”
In a statement on social media, UNRWA reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire, stressing that Palestinians have endured catastrophic conditions for nearly two years under continuous bombardment and siege. The agency warned that without urgent action, the humanitarian crisis would continue to spiral.
On Friday, UNRWA estimated the financial cost of displacement from Gaza City to the southern part of the enclave at $3,180 per family. The figure underscores the devastating economic toll on already impoverished families, many of whom have lost homes, livelihoods, and access to basic services.
The agency also highlighted extreme overcrowding in makeshift camps and tented areas set up for those forcibly displaced by the Israeli army. Aid groups report that these sites lack adequate food, clean water, and medical care, leaving hundreds of thousands vulnerable to disease and starvation.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned Israel’s mass displacement of civilians as a violation of international law. Palestinian officials say the campaign amounts to ethnic cleansing, part of what they describe as Israel’s wider strategy to depopulate Gaza and entrench its occupation.
The crisis in Gaza has drawn global condemnation, with growing calls for accountability and urgent intervention to protect civilians. Despite this, Israel continues to receive military and political backing from key Western powers, prolonging the suffering of millions of Palestinians.
