UNRWA Commissioner: Children in Gaza are freezing due to cold and lack of shelter

NEW YORK (Palestine Foundation Information Center) Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), said that children in Gaza are freezing to death due to the cold and lack of shelter.

In a press statement on Friday, Lazzarini said, “We need a ceasefire and an immediate flow of essential supplies, including winter supplies.”

He explained that blankets and winter supplies have been stuck for months, awaiting approval from Israel for entry into Gaza.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, who have been forced to flee their homes due to Israeli violence, are suffering from the severe cold in displacement camps, causing joint pain for some, while others are experiencing nosebleeds.

UNICEF warned that many displaced children in Gaza are wearing very few clothes, as many were forced to escape from Israeli bombardment wearing summer clothes earlier this year.

In this context, the United Nations recently warned that people living in temporary shelters in Gaza may not survive the winter, noting that at least 945,000 people need winter supplies, which have become exorbitantly expensive in the region.

Israel continues its aggressive war on the Gaza Strip for 448 consecutive days, alongside ongoing war crimes and horrific massacres, and attempts to displace residents in the northern part of the territory.
