WHO airlifts 33 Gaza patients to Jordan for urgent care

GENEVA, (The Palestine Foundation Pakistan)

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the evacuation of 33 patients and 109 caregivers from the Gaza Strip to Jordan on Monday, noting that some of those patients will be transferred to other countries in the coming days for advanced treatment.

“WHO is concerned about the long delays patients faced moving from the Karam Abu Salem crossing point out of Gaza to Allenby crossing, where, together with our team, they waited over four hours before being allowed to proceed, putting their fragile health at further risk,” WHO director-general Tedros Ghebreyesus said on his X page on Wednesday.

“Since October 2023, more than 10,600 patients have been medically evacuated along with over 12,000 companions from Gaza to over 30 countries,” Ghebreyesus pointed out.

“Yet more than 16,500 patients in Gaza still require medical evacuation, as the advanced care they need is not available in the Strip,” he added.

The WHO chief urged more countries to receive patients and help ensure their access to the medical treatment they urgently need.

“We also call for the opening of all evacuation routes, particularly to the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, and for movement of medical evacuation convoys to be expedited at crossings,” he said.
