Dr. Abu Safiya condemns detention, says he was performing his duties

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian physician and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, reportedly said during a recent court hearing that his detention by Israeli authorities lacks any legal justification.

Dr. Abu Safiya affirmed that his actions were strictly limited to fulfilling his professional and humanitarian duties by providing medical care to patients.

This was conveyed in a message delivered by lawyer Nasser Abu Odeh.

In his message, Dr. Abu Safiya explained that as a pediatrician, he dedicated his career to treating the sick and wounded, and to providing essential medical care to Gaza’s most vulnerable groups.

“I performed my work in accordance with international law and humanitarian standards, and my detention is unjust and arbitrary,” Dr. Abu Safiya said, demanding his immediate release.

Lawyer Abu Odeh said that he had submitted a request to the court for a ruling on his client’s case, expecting a verdict within the coming hours or days.

The lawyer pointed out that Dr. Abu Safiya is facing difficult health and humanitarian conditions inside Israeli prisons, adding that he was recently transferred to solitary confinement in Nafha jail.
