Gaza: Nine Palestinian martyrs’ bodies recovered from two sites in al-Zaytoun

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Specialized Civil Defense teams responsible for recovering the bodies of martyrs trapped beneath the rubble announced on Sunday that the remains of four Palestinians had been recovered from the Abu Shammala family home in Gaza City’s al-Zaytoun neighborhood, following two days of intensive fieldwork at the site, which was targeted by Israeli bombardment during the devastating war.

Colonel Mohammed Abu Dan, executive supervisor of the body recovery operations, said field teams had completed search and recovery work at the Abu Shammala family home and succeeded in locating and retrieving the remains of four martyrs from beneath the rubble of the destroyed house.

Abu Dan said specialized teams then moved to another site in al-Zaytoun neighborhood to continue search and recovery operations. So far, they have recovered five bodies from the site, while the search for the remaining bodies will resume the following day.

The recovery of martyrs’ bodies continues across various areas of Gaza amid the enormous destruction left behind by Israeli bombardment. Civil Defense and rescue teams face serious challenges, including a severe shortage of heavy machinery and the equipment needed to reach victims trapped beneath the rubble.

The operations are part of the second phase of a Civil Defense project to recover the bodies of Palestinians launched on July 19. The project aims to locate martyrs whose bodies remain buried beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings.

The number of martyrs whose bodies remain buried beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings in Gaza is estimated at around 15,000, while Civil Defense and medical teams remain unable to reach a large number of them because of the widespread destruction and severe shortages of equipment and resources.
