GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Gaza’s Ministry of Agriculture said the poultry sector has suffered extensive and widespread damage during the genocide, with most of the territory’s roughly 2,400 farms affected at high rates, reaching 100% in some categories.
Broiler chicken farms, both closed and open, were the hardest hit in terms of number and area. Closed farms sustained total damage at a rate of 100%, with losses estimated at $10.8 million, while open farms recorded a damage rate of 95%, with losses estimated at $11.6 million.
Layer chicken and turkey farms also suffered major damage exceeding 86%, while breeder farms, though fewer in number, were completely destroyed.
Overall losses in Gaza’s poultry sector reached about $30.7 million, reflecting the severe impact on one of the territory’s vital productive sectors.
Before the war, the poultry sector was one of the most important components of animal production in the Gaza Strip. It directly supported food security and supplied the local market with white meat and table eggs.
In 2022, production reached around 50,000 tons of white meat and 15,000 tons of table eggs, reflecting the sector’s important role in meeting local demand.
The number of poultry farms stood at about 1,982, covering a total area of nearly 297,000 square meters, with production capacity estimated at about 2.79 billion birds across Gaza’s governorates.
Production activity was concentrated mainly in Khan Yunis and Gaza governorates, followed by Deir Al-Balah, North Gaza and Rafah at varying levels.
