Hamas condemns Somaliland plan to open embassy in Jerusalem

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), The Hamas Movement condemned Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi’s announcement that the breakaway region plans to open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, calling the move a “political mistake” and a violation of international law and the longstanding Arab and Islamic position on the city.

In a statement on Sunday, Hamas said opening an embassy in occupied Jerusalem would show disregard for the city’s religious, political and legal status.

It warned of the serious consequences of the move and urged Somaliland’s authorities to reverse it.

The Movement also condemned Abdullahi’s visit to Israel and his meetings with Israeli officials, saying the steps were part of efforts to strengthen relations with a government accused of committing violations and crimes against Palestinians.

Hamas called on the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other relevant bodies to act against attempts to break the consensus supporting Palestinian rights and to prevent further normalization with Israel while its attacks on Palestinians continue.

The statement came as the Somaliland president arrived in Israel to take part in the opening of the planned embassy in occupied Jerusalem, a step that has drawn widespread criticism across the Arab and Muslim worlds.

Israeli media reported that the visit includes meetings with senior Israeli officials, including the president, foreign minister and prime minister, as well as economic officials, amid accelerating ties between the two sides in recent months.

Several countries, including Türkiye, Egypt, Qatar, Jordan and Pakistan, have rejected Somaliland’s decision to open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, reaffirming their opposition to measures that alter the city’s legal and historical status.
