Hussam Abu Safiya’s Testimony Exposes Horrific Abuse in Israeli Prisons

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Imprisoned Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya has revealed harrowing details about the conditions of his detention and the abuse he says he has endured inside Israeli prisons, according to his latest testimony relayed through his lawyer on Wednesday.

Abu Safiya said he has been repeatedly subjected to severe beatings across different parts of his body, including sensitive areas, with hands, feet and batons.

He said the assaults are repeatedly carried out as a form of punishment immediately after visits from his lawyers, amid harsh detention conditions.

The detained doctor also reported being deliberately deprived of sleep through constant noise and the use of loudspeakers throughout the night.

Abu Safiya said he has also faced repeated threats and warnings against telling his lawyer about the treatment he is subjected to in detention.

Previous serious injuries

Physicians for Human Rights reported documenting previous serious injuries sustained by Abu Safiya, including injuries to his head, face and other parts of his body.

The organization said the injuries included severe damage to his left eye, along with repeated complaints of pain and injuries to his head, chest and sensitive areas as a result of continued assaults.

Detained at Kamal Adwan Hospital

Israeli occupation forces detained Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya on December 27, 2024, during a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, while the medical facility was operating amid the war.

Abu Safiya suffers from chronic health conditions, including heart problems and high blood pressure, while his health has deteriorated during his detention.

UN bodies and international human rights and medical organizations continue to call for guarantees of Abu Safiya’s safety and for him to receive the medical care he needs.
