ICRC: Human suffering in Gaza continues amid widespread devastation

GAZA, (Palestine Foundation Information Center), Nicola von Arx, Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), affirmed that the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains unsustainable and unacceptable, stressing that the suffering of residents has not ended.

His remarks came at the conclusion of a three day field visit to Gaza, during which he met local authorities, community representatives, and ICRC partners, foremost among them the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.

Speaking from Gaza City, he noted that the first thing that strikes visitors upon entering the Strip is the scale of destruction, alongside the suffocating population density, with large numbers of people living in extremely cramped spaces.

The visit, held between June 23 and 25, included the ICRC field hospital in Rafah, ICRC teams in Deir al Balah, as well as Al Shifa Hospital and a water desalination project in Gaza City.

Von Arx emphasized that what he witnessed during the visit, and the suffering he observed among civilians, serves as a stark reminder of the need to respect international humanitarian law and to preserve a minimum of humanity during armed conflicts.
